Dressed for the occasion May 29, 2009

As you know, I have been on the hunt for a black dress for quite some time. I have now tried on 40 dresses that could be or would be suitable for a bridesmaid …. if only they fit!

Well, I went from zero options to possibly 4 options in no time flat!

Option #1: A simple black, satin strapless dress that just needs to be shortened. The only problem is, it could use a sash, so I’d have to find one.

Option #2: A custom made dress by yours truly. I started this project today with my sewing teacher. It should be pretty cute! Problem: it might not be good enough or done on time.

Option #’s 3 & 4: Check it — I found 2 dresses at White House Black Market and bought them both. I was there a few weeks ago and they had a dress similar to these that I think would have fit if they carried it in my size. I even check on-line, but no luck. So fingers crossed that one of these is going to get the job done! They should arrive in a few days. I think that whichever fits me the best is going to be The Big Winner. Which do you like better, the left or the right option? I know which is my favorite!300112429_001

300112346_001Now all I’ll have to do is shorten whichever dress I go with and find a cute pair of black, satin, high heels, and I am good to go! Yeah! What a huge relief….

Can I do that again? May 28, 2009

I am still looking for a black dress to wear as a bridesmaid in my soon to be sister-in-laws wedding. All of this wedding stuff is making me wish I could wear my dress again.

Isn’t it pretty?

Of course, I didn’t look quite so tall or skinny in it.

How cute is this fabric?

IMG_1551

I wanted to use it for something and was going to make an apron for myself, but I’m sort of into making bags right now,

so I finally made a tote.

It’s the floppiest little bag I’ve made yet. The fabric is really thin, and the lining is a bit flimsy too.

But I think it’s great for the summer, and though you can’t tell from the picture above, it has an outside pocket and an inside pocket, so plenty of room to hold all my stuff! IMG_1596

I bet it would look adorable with this little white dress. (hint, honey…)

Enter, The Pimm’s Cup May 26, 2009

I love Memorial Day weekend. It used to be even better because I would get the day off from work, and nothing is better than a long weekend. But now that that’s not the case, I had to enjoy it for it’s summer kick-off feel, and it definitely kicked things off to a good start!

Friday I went to the beach with my cousin. It was too cold to swim, but we napped in the sunshine and chatted about boys. That night I went out on a date with my hubsthumb_3_dominieshoek1_540w_00779408_dominieshoek1_540w_0045_cut to the backyard patio of one of our favorite LIC spots for a plate of fries and a pitcher of sangria.

Saturday I spent with my sister. Breakfast at cute little spot called 5 Ninth where we are pretty sure Heath Ledger is in hiding and 105898working as a waiter. My sister ordered Toads In A Hole. Isn’t that the cutest name for a breakfast ever?  After our lovely meal we took a walk and went shopping, and drooled over dresses  and rompers like these at Trina Turk:1708_multi_l1731_poppy_l1711_multi_l

Saturday night MNH came home exhausted from 2 rounds of golf and being in the sun all day, so we had a low key dinner with a friend.

Then I woke up on Sunday just in time to clean and put together a quick lunch before my parents and sister came over for a wee-little birthday gathering for my mom. We walked to another great LIC spot for a drink later that day. I love gins and tonic in the afternoon. MNH and I ended the night at a friends house for a BBQ.

Monday was another beautiful day, and we spent it golfing with my brother and sister-in-law. I now have a fabulous farmer’s tan and a bruise on my thigh that is in the shape of a golf club head. (How in the world…..)

Back in Brooklyn we grabbed a sandwich and a drink (enter the Pimm’s Cup, the new drink of the summer of ‘09) at Frankie’s in Carroll Gardens. 2571109784_651e310255

The Pimm’s Cup is summer in a glass. We took such a liking to it that we were inspired to continue the long weekend at my brother’s place for another BBQ and a round or two of PC’s. It was the perfect way to end a great weekend!

16641227_80_b My new apartment (the one I haven’t found yet) will not be complete without this sofa/love-seat thing. I heart it. Urban Outfitters. Who knew??

Befitting in Black May 21, 2009

As you may know from a previous post, I am a bridesmaid in my brother-in-law’s wedding.

I am to wear a black dress of my choice – the only stipulation, aside from the color – is that it hit somewhere around the knee. I posted a few dresses and everyone agreed that the bride’s choice was the best choice.

300113091_001 I totally agree, but the only store carrying it near me doesn’t have my size!  I am going to check them out anyway because they just might have another dress that would work.  I have already tried on about 20 different dresses. Can you believe that?! All I need is a cute, little, black dress, and I can’t find one! Well, that’s not entirely true. I found plenty of dresses, and plenty were cute. They just don’t fit me (or they cost hundreds and hundreds!). Thus is the hardship of the 5 nothing woman…

To combat this problem, I have decided to make a dress. Don’t worry, I am still looking for a real dress to wear in the wedding, but I am also making a dress so that I always have a nice, simple, black dress that fits me when I need one. Now, you might think this is quite the endeavor, and you would be right. It involves boning and panels, after all. However, my sewing instructor seems to think it’s possible and so I am going to design and custom fit a strapless, black cocktail dress.

It won’t be fancy, but at least it will fit.

Beach Day May 20, 2009

Today I sat inside my apartment all day, aside from the 1.5 hr sewing lesson up the street from my apartment. It was SO beautiful out, but I just kept finding I had things to do.

Here was my boring schedule for the day:

1. Check emails in the hopes of a great job offer. Nothing. Look through job listings. Again, nothing.

2. Clean - the building is starting to show our apartment to potential renters, so the place has to be at least less filthy than it was, and to be honest, pretty much still is.

3. Sewing homework - yes, I have sewing homework from my teacher and yes, just like in high school, I left it to the last minute. So I spent an hour or so taking care of it before my lesson today, and I did it wrong. Twice.

4. Creating an invitation - I have the fancy title of Fundraiser Chair for an upcoming event that you will hear about soon. It’s for Underworld Productions, the opera ensemble I have mentioned before, and it’s AWESOME. After my lesson today I finalized the fab invite and sent it out for approval.

So, what do you think? Personally, I think I’ve earned a beach day, and I have designated that to be tomorrow! I know it’s probably still too cold to swim, but I need me some beach. Long Beach is most likely where you will find me come noon-time tomorrow. I have never been there so it’s a bit of an adventure. If you have other ideas, I am open to suggestions, and willing to travel a bit (a tiny, little bit)!

Long Beach

South shore of Long Island (Stretches from Maple Blvd. to Brookline Ave.)
The scene: A celebrity-studded resort in its early 20th century heyday, this five-mile pristine stretch of sand still has an historic boardwalk for rollerblading or cycling (which is lucky because there’s no swimming allowed).
Getting there: Long Island Railroad Express from Penn Station
Travel time: 1 hour
Fees: Roundtrip train and beach admission package, $17 from Manhattan or Brooklyn, $14 from Jamaica (Queens baby!)

The Hunt Saga Continues May 19, 2009

Well, my love for ridiculous paint colors has stood in the way of the perfect Brooklyn apartment. MNH and I met the landlady and she really just wanted to keep the walls white. I really did not. And that was the deal breaker. So, you can all uncross your fingers, because we didn’t get it. I am still on the hunt for an apartment.

Speaking of the hunt, I am also still looking for a full time job. I have an interview today – a 2nd one in fact -  so re-cross your fingers and wish me luck! I am supposed to plan on being there for 1.5 hours – I have no idea how to be uber-impressive for that long but, damn it, I’m going to try!

A Lovely Crafternoon May 18, 2009

On Derby Day a beautiful idea was born — and I forget the name of it because it was really long, but the gist of it is to get together with friends every once in a while for an afternoon of crafts! Each  “Crafternoon” would be hosted by someone who also leads the project though in this case, we all sort of helped each other out because none of us really knew what we were doing.  My friend BS hosted the first one and another friend supplied the project, which was a really cute idea and fairly simple to do, though we did cut out one step to simplify it even further. Some people actually cut two steps (if you care, it is the lining and the circle bottom).

Here is a link to the tutorial we used to make our Yoga Mat Bags.

IMG_1598Everyone met at BS’ apartment where she had a great spread of wine, cheese, crackers, and some delicious chocolates. We had a slow start because it was nice just to sit around and chat, but eventually we got ourselves to the fabric stores nearby to hunt for some fabric that was not ridiculously expensive. That part was not easy. One of our friends almost bought a yard of fabric for $45, but the saleslady was kind enough to let her back out when she found out the price, even though the yard had already been cut. The deal of the day went to GL who found super cute, silver fabric for $3/yard.IMG_1604

Back at the apartment it took another while to get started – I think we were feeling a bit lazy yesterday – but finally everyone started cutting and measuring, and BS gave us a demo on how to use her very old Singer sewing machine.

IMG_1602

It’s beautiful, but just a little temperamental. It makes this really sweet sound, like an actual machine, whereas my new machine humms along sounding like a computer.

We only had one guy in the group, and I think he was there sort of accidentally and didn’t really know what he was getting into, though he totally got into it. IMG_1605

IMG_1599I opted not to lug my heavy sewing machine all the way from LIC to Chinatown, so I felt like I shouldn’t take up sewing time. Instead I kind of just hung out and helped here and there, and took a bunch of photos.
After a while some people needed a yoga mat bag break, and BS provided them with an old summer camp fave — string friendship bracelets! Another tutorial was needed as we haven’t been to camp in a while, but it was easily located on-line.

IMG_1606

Finally GW finished her bag.IMG_1610Well, almost, anyway. She still needed to put the string through the top for a cinched closure, and she skipped adding the circular bottom for time – plus she doesn’t own a yoga mat so she wasn’t really bothered about that.

I had to leavee at this point so I didn’t get to see the other bags but I am sure they were great! We are hoping to cinvince our friend JP to host the next Crafternoon so we can make homemade kites! I am struggling to come up with a craft because the only thing I do is sew, so if you have any ideas please pass them on!
